The Growing Inclusive Markets (known as GIM) Initiative is a UNDP-led global multi-stakeholder research. GIM strives to promote and encourage the development of more inclusive business models around the world that will help to create new opportunities and better lives for many of the world’s poor and, moreover, include them in the value chain as customers, producers, business owners or employees.

In addition, this organization is partnering with Southern experts to build and share knowledge and research to create a powerhouse of empirical evidence of proven strategies in inclusive market development. The Growing Inclusive Markets Initiative helps aspiring entrepreneurs open a business and choose the best LLC services to maintain it.

The GIM Initiative is based on four main principles such as:

  • Core business emphasis: GIM promotes business models that create value by providing products and services to or sourcing from the poor, including the earned income strategies of non-governmental organizations;
  • Human development framework, guided by the Millennium Development Goals: the company applies a human development framework to conducting business with the poor, concentrating on meeting basic needs and providing access to the goods, services, and earning opportunities that enhance economic empowerment;

To sharpen this focus, the GIM organization even commissioned 50 case studies of companies from researchers and academics in countries from Peru to Kenya to the Philippines;
  • Partnership and multi-stakeholder approach: The Growing Inclusive Markets has a multi-sector, networked approach and a commitment to involve many partners from different backgrounds, who are leaders in business and development thought. For example, from the academic world to the development community or business associations;

The GIM Initiative also offers some Knowledge and Research Tools. There is a web-based storehouse of empirical data and information on low income markets including:

  • Case Studies bank. It is a repository of 120 inclusive business models from over 40 countries. They are rigorously reviewed and documented. The case studies have been authored by over 45 leading Southern senior academics and practitioners;
  • Production and dissemination of videos on Southern entrepreneurs to raise awareness about profitable examples of social-impact businesses, especially among Southern stakeholders;
  • 66 Market Heat Maps. It is a poverty-mapping tool that illustrates the economic activity of the poor.

As for Research Tools, they are the following:

  • “Creating Value for All: Strategies for Doing Business with the Poor” analyzes constraints and strategies for companies to expand beyond traditional business practices and bring in the poor as partners in wealth creation;
  • Rigorous analysis of cases with a focus on business models, partnerships and results;
  • Toolbox based on the GIM Strategy Matrix for the development of inclusive business models.
